How deep are the shelves? Do they have to be two sided, or can you have a blank side and a deep front shelf?

The shelves are 7" deep. I am not sure i understand your question so you may need to call us and we can clarify. The shelves are not two-sided. The extra depth behind the shelving accommodates the mattress.
